Today, we’re making Pretzel Bite Muddy Buddies!
If you are a salty sweet lover like me, this one is for you today. Muddy buddies (sometimes called puppy chow depending on where you’re from) are one of my favorite sweet treats of all time. If you’re not familiar with this delicious little treat, it starts with Chex cereal covered in a chocolate/peanut butter mix then coated in a generous dusting of powdered sugar. Soooo good.
I’ve been thinking about muddy buddying pretzels for years. But, I’ve never done it because the OG recipe is just too good. While at the grocery store a few weeks ago, the peanut butter stuffed pretzel nuggets caught my eye, and I knew it was time. So Here. We. Go!
Like I said, we’re going to start with some peanut butter stuffed pretzel nuggets as a replacement for the cereal in the original recipe. As far as size goes, these are the perfect poppable bite sized shape for this project. There are a few different pretzel brands that sell a product like this. But truth be told, I find the Walmart store brand version superior. The main reason I prefer this brand is the packaging. We need the exact amount of pretzel nugs that come in the container for the recipe, and we can reuse the same container for storage after our treats dry. It’s win win!
To coat our pretzels, we’ll combine some milk chocolate chips, some creamy peanut butter, and a little butter in a microwave safe bowl. Now, the original muddy buddies recipe calls for semisweet chocolate, but I think we need the extra sweetness from the milk chocolate to balance out the saltiness from the pretzels. Trust me on this. We’ll melt everything together until it’s smooth and creamy, mix in a little vanilla, and we’re ready to cover our pretzel bites in that glorious mixture.
After topping the pretzels with the chocolate mix, we’ll toss them gently to make sure every last millimeter of pretzel is covered. Then, we’ll transfer them to a larger zip top baggie with A LOT of powdered sugar. Seal the bag making sure to leave air space in the bag for shaking. Then shake, shake, shake with everything you have to completely coat each individual nugget with a healthy layer of powdered sugar. From there, we’ll spread the mix onto a wax paper lined baking sheet to dry for about a half hour, and that’s all there is to it!
These little bites are absolutely heavenly. They’re the perfect balance of salty and sweet, and the sensation of each flavor hits you at every layer. From the salty sweet peanut butter center, to the salty pretzel, to the salty sweet chocolate coating, to the sweet sugary shell…these bites are the gift that keeps on giving. I’ve devoured so many of these little bites in such a short period of time, my body must be at least 65% peanut butter by now.
Alright, everyone! Let me know if you’re officially a pretzel muddy buddies convert like me.
I hope you guys enjoy. And, let’s eat!
Pretzel Bite Muddy Buddies
Serves: 14 Print
Ingredients:
1 24 oz container (about 7 cups) peanut butter filled pretzel nuggets (I use Walmart brand)
1 cup milk chocolate chips
½ cup peanut butter
½ stick (4 tbsp) unsalted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar
Directions:
Add pretzel nuggets to a large bowl. Set aside.
To a microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 1 minute, stir well, and place back in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir well until smooth. Add vanilla, and stir until completely combined.
Pour chocolate mixture over the pretzel nuggets. Toss gently until the pretzels are completely coated in the mix. Transfer mix to a large gallon zip top bag. Add powdered sugar, and seal the bag without releasing the air in the bag. Shake vigorously until the pretzel bites are fully coated.
Transfer pretzels to a wax paper lined baking sheet, and spread out into a single layer. Allow mix to dry for 30 minutes. Enjoy!
Recipe notes:
*Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the pantry. I store the mix in the same container that the pretzels came out of.
