Dairy Free Matcha Cookie Shake

Dairy Free Matcha Cookie Shake- A dairy intolerance doesn't mean you can't still enjoy a nice cookies and cream shake! And, this one has a fun twist with the addition of earthy matcha powder!

I'm going through a MAJOR green tea phase right now.

I mean, I've always been a big green tea lover. But, it's all I want these days.

For Christmas, the bestie got me the cutest tea set, and she sent gave me some unique tea flavors along with it. In the mix that she gave me was a green tea chai, which I'd never seen before, and I couldn't wait to try it since I know I love chai and I know I love green tea.

The green tea chai was delicious, by the way.

I recently saw this article headline about how green tea could help fight COVID. I didn't read through the whole thing, but it talked about how a recent study showed that an enzyme in green tea could act as an inhibitor of the virus. Who knows if there's any truth to that claim, but it's very possible that subconsciously I want all the green tea right now to help protect myself from this ugly virus.

Or, maybe I'm just in the midst of one of my obsessive cravings. Plain and simple. The world may never know...

Either way, I want hot green tea. I want iced green tea. I want green tea in my smoothies. Heck, I even threw some into today's recipe!

Today, we're making a Dairy Free Matcha Cookie Shake!

Though this is basically a dairy free cookies and cream milkshake with a little extra earthy matcha powder thrown in for good measure, I feel like this shake is totally acceptable as a dessert treat or as a breakfast shake. At least, I've been drinking them for breakfast...so there's that. ;-)

All we need is a handful of ingredients and a good blender, and we have a sweet and delicious shake in a matter of minutes!

The base of our shake is a dairy free ice cream. I know so many lactose intolerant people that are willing to destroy their tummies just for a bowl of ice cream or a delicious milkshake. So, this one's for them. I found this super delicious cookie dough coconut milk ice cream at the grocery store; and honestly, I think I may prefer the coconut ice cream now. It's sweet and creamy with a lovely coconutty undertone. So, since I was already planning on making a cookie shake, cookie dough ice cream seemed like the right move. And, I was totally right!

We're going to let our ice cream thaw for just a few minutes on the countertop before we add it to the blender so that it blends in nicely with the rest of our ingredients. To the ice cream, we're going to add in some chilled coconut milk. I typically tend to prefer lite coconut milk, but we want the full fat option for this recipe. It just helps to make everything extra thick and creamy.

We can't have a cookie shake without cookies, so we're going to toss some Oreo cookies into the blender with our ice cream and milk. Now, I was feeling a little extra nutty the first time I made this shake, so I snuck some matcha powder into blender to balance out the sweetness and to add a nice earthy tone to the shake.

Matcha powder is basically just ground green tea leaves. It's very grassy. It's very strong. And, I know that some people find it to be a little bitter. I love the stuff, so I added a generous scoop to my smoothie. If you don't like the matcha flavor, leave it out! Or if you're not ready to go full out with the matcha flavor but still want to give this unique flavor a try, feel free to add a little less matcha powder and taste as you go.

Once we have our shake all blended up, we're left with the creamiest, dreamiest cooling shake. The sweet coconut flavor from the ice cream and milk is balanced out by the natural earthiness of the matcha powder. And, can anyone really be mad when Oreo cookies are invited to the party? This is cookies and cream shake that's been taken to the next level!

Alright, everyone! Whether green tea has virus fighting properties or not, there are plenty of other natural good things that green tea can do for our bodies. So, we might as well sneak some in whenever we can...even into our milkshakes!

I hope you enjoy! And, let's drink!

Dairy Free Matcha Cookie Shake

Serves: 2 Print

Ingredients:

  • 6 scoops (3 cups) dairy free cookie dough ice cream (I used So Delicious coconut milk ice cream)

  • ½ cup full fat coconut milk, chilled

  • 1 tbsp matcha powder (I used culinary grade)

  • 8 Oreo Thins cookies, crushed, plus more for garnish

Directions:

  1. Allow ice cream to sit out on the countertop for about 10 mins to soften slightly.

  2. To a blender, add ice cream, coconut milk, matcha powder, and crushed cookies. Blend until fully combined and smooth. Pour into serving glasses, and top with additional crushed cookies, if desired. Serve immediately.

Recipe notes:

*Any non dairy ice cream with a vanilla flavor base will work for this shake. I really like the coconut milk ice cream bases, because they pair great with the coconut milk we use in our drink.

*We want to use full fat coconut milk for this recipe to keep our smoothie nice and creamy. Make sure it's chilled, and that makes it even thicker and creamier.

*Matcha powder is ground green tea leaves, and it's pretty readily available these days. Typically, you see culinary grade and ceremonial grade. This recipe uses culinary grade. I purchase my matcha powder from Amazon.

*You could use 6 regular sized Oreos in place of the 8 Oreos Thins.
