Crispy Boursin Egg

Crispy Boursin Egg- Taking inspiration from last year’s viral crispy feta egg, this version using Boursin cheese is both creamy and delish.

Today, we’re making a Crispy Boursin Egg!

Say what you want about social media, but one of my favorite things about Tiktok is the creativity when it comes to new food trends, kitchen hacks, and recipe ideas. Last summer, one of the big viral moments was the crispy feta egg. You fry an egg in the center of a ring of crumbled feta, toss it in a tortilla coated in mashed avocado, then fold it up and eat it like a taco. Then, there was even an upgraded version that added a dab of chili crisp to that egg frying situation, and it was absolutely incredible. And, it’s something I probably would’ve never thought to do without the inspo from the internet!

Today’s recipe is the 2.0 version of this trend. And honestly, it kinda came to life by accident. I was craving a crispy feta egg, opened the feta container in my fridge to find a fuzzy wuzzy mess, then caught the package of Boursin out of the corner of my eye, and decided to make a quick pivot. And man, am I glad I did.

To start, we need a truly nonstick skillet. I like to use my ceramic skillet for this one. But if your nonstick is not great, it’s ok to add a light layer of cooking spray. Just a little bit is all we want.

Then, we’ll take a couple tablespoons of Boursin cheese (I like the garlic and fine herbs flavor), and we’ll sprinkle it in the skillet to create a ring shape that is approximately the size of what a cracked egg would be. It’s ok if it’s not perfect. We’ll let the cheese cook by itself in the skillet for a couple of minutes until we can hear it start to sizzle. Then, we’ll crack our egg right into the center of the ring of cheese. Give the egg a pinch of salt and pepper, cover the skillet so the egg can set, and let it cook for just about 2 minutes. That’s all there is to it. We’re done!

Staying on brand with the original inspiration for this egg, I chose to serve this over some avocado toast. Mash an avocado, season it with a pinch of salt and Aleppo pepper, schmear it over some nice toasty sourdough, then lay that crispy egg right on top. Easy breezy. I’ve also plopped this egg right in a good ol’ breakfast sandwich. And, that’s incredibly delish too. You can’t beat it when the cheese is built right into the egg!

The magic of this egg is the caramelization that happens to the bottom side of the cheese. Boursin is naturally pretty creamy but a little crumbly. But when it has a couple minutes to toast in the skillet, the crumbles fuse together with the egg, you get a nice golden layer of crispiness on the bottom, but the top side of the cheese is still so smooth and creamy. Plus, the toasted cheese adds a little hint of nuttiness that you don’t really expect. And, it’s just so lovely!

I’m already a huge Boursin stan, and I surely didn’t need a reason to love it any more. But this crispy egg is as good a reason as any.

Okie dokes! A quick confession before we go eat…this recipe was supposed to drop in May. Oopsie! But you know, life. So, if you see the video on social media talking about summer…no you didn’t.

I hope you guys enjoy. And, let’s eat!

Crispy Boursin Egg

Serves: 1          Print

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Garlic and Fine Herbs Boursin cheese, crumbled

  • 1 egg

  • Salt, pepper, and aleppo pepper, to taste

  • 1 slice toasted sourdough bread

  • 1 mini avocado, mashed

  • Microgreens, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Heat a small non stick skillet over medium high heat. Crumble cheese into the pan making a ring that’s roughly the size of a cracked egg. When you hear the cheese start to sizzle, crack the egg into the center of the ring. Season egg with a pinch of salt and pepper.

  2. Cover the skillet, and cook for 2-3 mins until the cheese has started to caramelize and the egg reaches your desired doneness.

  3. To serve, spread mashed avocado over the surface of the toast. Season avocado with a pinch of salt and aleppo pepper. Top with egg and microgreens, if desired. Enjoy!

Recipe notes:

*If your non stick skillet tends to stick a little, give the pan a light spritz of cooking spray before crumbling in the cheese.

*Feel free to experiment with different flavors of Boursin cheese.

*Avocado toast is not the only way to serve this egg. Try it in a sandwich or a breakfast taco…delish!
