Peanut Butter Banana Dog Cookies

August 4, 2017 by Nicole Collins

This one is for the fur babies today.

My little boy's birthday was on Monday, so I made him a special treat!

And let me tell you, both doggies went NUTS for these cookies.

I adopted Charlie about 4 ½ years ago. Monday was his 9th birthday. I was just telling my mom over the weekend how I can't believe he's only been my baby for less than half of his little life. It feels like sooooo much longer than that!

Charlie is the sweetest little pup ever. He man be an old man in doggie years, but he has such a child like spirit.

When his sister gets a little too rough when they're playing (she's the alpha), and he gets scared; he runs straight in to my arms. It's the cutest thing ever. I can just picture him saying “Mommy, save me!”

And, he's got more energy than the energizer bunny. I'm telling you...this guy can play for hours and hours on end. He's great at entertaining himself, which is nice. He loves playing ball and blanket. He'll hide the ball in his blanket, then fight the blanket to get it out. So, adorable!

So, my boy had to have something special for his birthday this year. I mean, it's the last year before double digits, so why not!

This recipe couldn't be any easier. There are only 4 ingredients, and there's a good chance you have these ingredients on hand at all times. We take some super ripe mashed bananas, peanut butter, eggs, and whole wheat flour; we mix it up; we roll it out; and we use cute cookie cutters to cut them out before popping them in the oven. So simple.

I'm definitely the dog mom that talks to the pups to keep them informed about what's going on when something involves them. But, I did not tell either of them that I was baking doggie cookies.

Somehow, someway, Bella knew what was up. She was going INSANE waiting for the cookies to cool. She was spinning in circles, barking, crying. She never acts like that when I'm in the kitchen. I truly don't know how she knew they were for Charlie and her. But she did! Here's a picture of her yelling at me while I told her she had to wait for the cookies to cool.

Both doggies LOVED these cookies. They kept coming back for more and more. Bella actually didn't stop crying until I sealed the cookies up and put them away. It was sooooo strange, but that's how I knew we had a hit on our hands. I guess Bella is like her mama...a peanut butter freak!

Even better than being 4 ingredients and super simple...these cookies are full of stuff that's healthy for doggies. Peanut butter has heart healthy fats and vitamins. Banana provides the sweetness in our treat without loading the pups with artificial sugars. There's no added salt, sugar, or fat; and everything is natural. So, you don't have to feel bad about giving your babies 1 (or 4) cookies at a time. Though like all treats (and just like it is for us humans), moderation is key.

I must admit to you that when I make homemade doggie treats, I always taste them out of curiosity. Though, I wouldn't kick back with a plate full of these and a glass of milk myself, they actually tasted better than some of the other ones I've made in the past. I'm sure it's all the peanut butter!

For the record, I do not taste store bought doggie treats. Ewwww. It's just the fact that I know I've put everyday people food in doggie cookies that makes me want to see what it tastes like. No judging!

So, happy birthday to by second born. I love you Charlie Boy!

And, make these treats for your babies asap to let them know you love them too!

Let's bake!

Peanut Butter Banana Dog Cookies Serves: 30 cookies Print

Ingredients:

  • 2 very ripe bananas, mashed with a fork

  • ¾ cup peanut butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a large cookie tray with parchment paper. In a mixing bowl, beat banana, peanut butter, and eggs with a hand mixer. Add flour, and mix by hand until fully combined and a dough has formed.

  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll cookie dough out to ¼ inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut dough in to desired shapes. Place cookies on the parchment lined cookie tray. Alternately, roll dough in to roughly 1 tbsp balls of dough. Place dough balls on parchment paper, and use the tines of a fork to make a crisscross pattern on the cookie. Bake for 20-23 minutes until the cookies are golden brown. Cool completely before giving to the babies. Keep stored in an air tight container for about a week.

Recipe notes:

*Make sure your bananas are super ripe to make mashing them easier and to make the cookies sweeter for the pups.

*The cookies will seem oily for a second when you first pull them out of the oven, but that will soak back in when the cookies dry. They will not feel oily at all once dried.

*As with every treat, moderation is key.

*I got the personalized cookie cutter from Etsy.
